Here at White Lodge, our children are introduced to many festivals to create an awareness of the variety of cultures that represent Singapore. Inspired by our core value “Celebrate Differences”, today we come together for one of the most joyous Muslim occasions, Hari Raya Puasa also known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which is celebrated by Muslims all over the world on of the first day Syawal (the tenth month of the lunar Islamic calendar).
“Hari Raya” means Celebration Day in Malay while “puasa” translates to “fasting”. This festival is celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of dawn-to-sunset fasting.
To begin with, our children came dressed in colourful traditional Malay costumes. They participated in this cultural celebration by carrying out a mini Hari Raya skit to show how a typical Malay Muslim family partakes in gatherings with family and friends during the festival; and there was even a display of Joget, a traditional Malay dance and the children happily immersed in the celebration with joy and laughter.
The children enjoyed taking turns to dress up in the traditional Malay costumes, played traditional games such Five stones, “Chapteh”, Spinning tops, congka and even had the opportunity to taste some pineapple tarts.
It was truly a day that the children had so much fun celebrating a unique festival with zest and zeal!
To all our Muslim families and friends, SELAMAT HARI RAYA PUASA!
