On Saturday 20th October 2018, over 120 families and friends attended the annual UN Day Celebration held at the Stamford American International School. Observed worldwide on the 24th of October each year, United Nations Day is devoted to sharing the aims and achievements of the United Nations Organisation with the global community.
Advocating the White Lodge Values, “We Celebrate Differences”, “We Respect Our World”, “We Love Learning”, “We Keep it Real” and “We Encourage Imagination”, White Lodge joined the list of several schools throughout the world to celebrate the diversity of our community.
The day started even before the door opened to our bigger community. Our parent volunteers along with teachers from seven White Lodge Kindergartens set up booths, prepared the sumptuous spread of snacks and finger food, decorated their tables with the best arrangement, all with the aim to introduce their native countries to other families.
Ms Tresa, emcee of the day, as well as our parent volunteer from White Lodge West Coast, started the event with a great energy boost. Simran and his team had once again joined us for this celebration with the energetic Bhangra, a folk dance and music originated from Punjab, India. Our Mandarin teachers, led by Ms Wang Hong, brought us a traditional Chinese dance.
Zumba led by Ms Susanah Amaro, our parent volunteer from Bukit Timah, brought the crowd’s energy to its highest with the movements. Uncle Mo, our in-house musician, along with the White Lodge Teachers presented “Hello to the Children of the World” and “Big Beautiful Planet” to mark the great opening for the event.
With the cheers of everyone, the families dispersed to travel around the world at the end of the cultural performances. Amidst the feasting on international snacks and dishes, the colourful costumes, the exchange of conversations and greetings, grew the pride of belonging to the White Lodge Community.
It is through events like these that we continue to bridge the learning for our children and encourage parent involvement in the learning journey of their children. We look forward to continued participation of parents, teachers and others in the community to bring more meaning to the children’s learning. Events like these remind us of the rich heritage that we have inherited from the world and remind us to keep it safe, peaceful and resource-rich for generations to come.
Of course a grandiose event like this could not have been possible without the support of our senior management and the Stamford American International School who hosted us at their premises. We express our heartfelt thanks to the SAIS staff that worked laboriously to oversee the seamless transition of logistics involved before, during and after the event.
As the day drew to a close, we carried with us the wonderful memories, celebrating the diversity of the world we live in, an experience that well integrated the learning organised for the children.
