White Lodge understands the diverse needs of our young language learners and the need for a robust Mandarin programme. To address this need, we are proud to announce the launch of our first Mandarin-English Bilingual Programme at White Lodge Upper Bukit Timah. We have enhanced our programme to be delivered simultaneously in English and Mandarin in a childcare setting. This will provide more exposure to learning Mandarin as a second language in preparation of primary education at a local Singapore or International School.
The Mandarin programmes are planned in line with Singaporean Kindergarten and Primary School frameworks. Our unique curriculum incorporates Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence’s and Perceptual-Motor Programme- inspired learning.
Mandarin is the primary language for Maths and Science subjects. We have developed fun language-based activities to lay a strong foundation from a young age. The focus is on the 听(listening) and 说 (speaking) aspects before we work towards proper sentence structure and vocabulary. The pre-kindergarten and kindergarten levels are focused on reading(读) and writing (写).
The objective for the children at the childcare is to:
- Enjoy learning Mandarin for life
- to be confident bilingual communicators
- communicate, read and write confidently, in Mandarin in preparation for a successful transition to primary school
Playgroup and Pre-Nursery Mandarin Programme:
The class is conducted entirely in the Mandarin and English Languages even though it may be difficult at the beginning for children who are unfamiliar with both languages. The children will be encouraged to learn the language through music and movement, art and craft, speech and drama activities. They will learn recognition of common goods in daily life through use of visuals and toys. This provides a good foundation for their continued learning.
Nursery Mandarin Language:
This is an exciting time to learn a language as children are more confident. The bilingual programmme provides introduction to Mandarin songs, movements, reciting Nursery Rhymes, pre-reading and pre-writing skills. Children will be given many opportunities to express their feelings and thoughts through speech and drama activities to gain more confidence in Mandarin. At this level, children would have 80 per cent Mandarin exposure and 20 per cent English.
To promote children’s interactive skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing our programme which combines stories (strengthening reading ability), introduction of simple sentence structures (using chosen verbs, noun, adjectives), recognizing Chinese Characters (participating interactive language activities), Writing (building high memory retention in strokes, radicals, sequence of Chinese characters and certain Chinese Characters). At this stage, we gradually extend Children’s vocabularies by learning simple Idioms, Tongue twisters and Tang poems. We continue to emphasize on oral and listening skills through recitals, presentations to stimulate greater interests in learning Mandarin as a second Language. At this level, children would have 70 per cent Mandarin exposure and 30 per cent English.
Kindergarten Mandarin Language:
At this age group we focus on more reading and writing skills to prepare the children for Primary 1. We encourage children to write creatively to improve their mandarin language competency. Mandarin is further extended through Idioms, Poems recitals, Tongue twisters, three-character primer and simple sentences of The Analects of Confucius! Hanyu Pinyin is taught at this stage as well. At this level, children would have 60 per cent Mandarin exposure and 40 per cent English.
Pre-Primary Mandarin Language
At this age group we aim to introduce and work on school textbook and assessment techniques. It helps pupils to anticipate and solve immediate difficulties independently that they may encounter. The vocabulary and Idioms used are geared towards MOE syllabus. Children from non-Mandarin speaking environments are immersed in listening, speaking and reading activities. We foster the abilities of speaking, questioning and to strengthen the student’s confidence for Oral assessments at primary school. We elevate their abilities in comprehension and verbal expression with the use of additional materials to further understanding and enhance expression ability. At this level, children would have 50 per cent Mandarin exposure and 50 per cent English.
Half day or full day programmes are available as well as child care subsidies for Singaporean and working parents are applicable.
